18 yield 19 20 21 22 Citizen science and pollination services 2 Abstract 23 1) Pollination by insects is a vital ecosystem service and the need for its 24 assessment is increasing in recognition and political pressure, but there are 25 currently no large-scale systematic monitoring schemes in place to measure 26 the direct provision of this service. 27 2) This study tested a protocol for using a Citizen science approach to quantify 28 pollination service provision in gardens and allotments, requiring participants 29 to grow Vica faba plants and carry out some simple manipulations of the 30 pollination environment (flowers with bees excluded, flowers hand-pollinated, 31 or flowers left for local pollinators to visit). Volunteers assessed yield in the 32 three treatments. 33 3) Eighty participants from across the UK successfully completed all parts of the 34 protocol; a further ninety three participants were unsuccessful but actively 35 engaged with the project 36 4) Overall, our results suggest that pollination services for V. faba are currently 37 not limiting in gardens or allotments in the UK. It is possible and cost-effective 38 to recruit volunteers to collect data on pollination deficits using this protocol. 39 5) The approach used in this paper, which could readily be extended to 40 incorporate other plant species reliant on different guilds of pollinators, is 41 feasible for adoption as a national monitoring scheme for pollination services.

ASSESSING MIGRATION OF RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS (ARCHILOCHUS COLUBRIS) AT BROAD SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL SCALES Evaluación de la Migración de Archilochus colubris a Escalas Amplias de Tiempo y Espacio

—Phenological patterns in birds appear to be temperature-dependent in part, and global temperatures are undergoing change. Many studies of bird phenology are conducted at broad temporal but local spatial scales, making it difficult to assess how temperature affects bird migration across landscapes. Recently, networks of “citizen science” volunteers have emerged whose collective efforts may impr...

Pollination and restoration.

Pollination services underpin sustainability of restored ecosystems. Yet, outside of agri-environments, effective restoration of pollinator services in ecological restoration has received little attention. This deficiency in the knowledge needed to restore pollinator capability represents a major liability in restoration programs, particularly in regions where specialist invertebrate and verteb...

Flight of the bumble bee: Buzzes predict pollination services

Multiple interacting factors drive recent declines in wild and managed bees, threatening their pollination services. Widespread and intensive monitoring could lead to more effective management of wild and managed bees. However, tracking their dynamic populations is costly. We tested the effectiveness of an inexpensive, noninvasive and passive acoustic survey technique for monitoring bumble bee ...
